International Business and Finance Law, LLM (Online)

The accredited Master of Laws (LLM) in International Business and Finance Law at Golden Gate University School of Law is taught in a 100% online format that combines both self-paced (asynchronous) and live-sessions (synchronous) components.  It is specifically designed for working professionals to complete in one year.  The program is built for anyone holding a bachelor’s degree in any specialization who wishes to acquire foundational knowledge and to develop skills in the traditional and emerging areas of comparative and international business, corporate, and finance law and practices. 

The curriculum offers a wide array of specialized courses within international and comparative business and finance law, as well as case laws and current practices developed by experts, attorneys, and academics.  It mainly focuses on international business transactions and commercial contracts; impact of technological progress on international businesses and legal challenges posed by digital innovation on them; fundamentals of business associations, including corporations, partnerships, and limited liability entities domestically and internationally; multilateral and international rules and regulations governing international trade and the WTO dispute settlement system as well as emerging challenges for international trade relations; international investment law; comparative intellectual property that focuses on different legal regimes for the regulation of copyright, patent, trademark, unfair competition, and enforcement law as well as key principles, agreements, and institutions that govern intellectual property internationally.  Cutting edge issues in corporate law with intellectual property implications, such as blockchain technology and its consequences for business and commerce will also be covered.

Students will understand the legal rules, principles and theories of substantive and procedural law to effectively identify legal doctrine and resolve legal problems.  They will gain enough expertise to succeed in business and finance law related fields whether as attorney or other professionals.

Student Learning Outcomes

Students graduating from the LLM in International Business and Finance Law will acquire:

  • Knowledge of the legal rules, principles, and theories in substantive and procedural law within international and comparative business and finance law.
  • Knowledge of fundamental public policies underlying specified fields of law within international and comparative business and finance law.
  • The ability to apply the legal rules, principles, and theories in the relevant fields of substantive and procedural law to identify legal doctrine and help resolve legal problems.
  • The ability effectively to articulate legal issues, identify and explain the relevant rules, and make legal arguments and counter arguments by drawing analogies and distinguishing among legal authorities to reach a conclusion.
  • The ability to apply various types of legal reasoning and analytic tools to form legal arguments.
  • The ability to organize legal arguments and theories to produce both persuasive and predictive writing sufficient to succeed in a professional setting.

Requirements for the LLM in International Business and Finance Law


The Master of Laws (LLM) in International Business and Finance Law requires completion of 24 units. Students must earn a grade of “C-” or better in each course and cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or better.
