ARTS 50 Contemporary Arts and Culture

Provides an overview of influential art movements from Modernism to the present. Groupings of artists will be compared to discover thematic similarities, points of influence, and derivation. We will also examine modern and postmodern philosophy, as well as art criticism to gain an understanding of the philosophical motivation and cultural context of art. The goal of the course is to develop a rich understanding of contemporary art that allows students to comprehend the relevance and significance of art to contemporary culture and to their personal lives. Corequisite(s): ENGL 50 or ENGL 60.
